The weather in Portugal tends to be mild when compared to other big destinations. November marks the beggining of rainy season, but December sometimes feel like early Spring days. January and February tend to be the best time to surf, and perfect for snowbirds, as we don’t have many days with freezing temperatures. May and June are perfect months for sightseeing with several sunny days. July and August are the hottest months, perfect to go to the beach, but also the busiest months.

Portugal is a small country, with several regional differences, as we get an Atlantic influence, but we are also impacted by the heat coming from north Africa. Lisbon has no snow, but the northern part of Portugal can be all white with snow, while in the Algarve people sip caffes with a sweater on.

Portugal Weather by Season

Portugal has 4 distinct seasons, and we are “blessed” as very rarely we have natural disasters relative to weather during the year, especially compared with other countries worldwide, which is mainly because of Portugal’s location and geographic layout.

Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit if you are looking for great weather and less crowds. Travelling to Portugal in the Winter, can be the perfect getaway if you are a snowbird, as our Winter is not too cold and you can only find snow in some parts of Portugal.

Summer months are hot and dry, but they are the ideal months for beach lovers, and for families with children vacationing from school.

This section is meant to help you understand each season in Portugal, with an overview of each region.

Spring
MARCH - JUNE

Spring is one of the best seasons to visit Portugal. Slowly, the days start to get longer and with more sunshine, calling for more outdoor activities. The temperatures are very comfortable, specially for visitors who arrive from colder climates. Slowly, local life is spent outside in the parks, gardens and day dreaming about Summer. Drizzles can happen occasionaly, so it’s a great idea to pack a light umbrella.

Summer
JUNE - SEPTEMBER

Summer is the most antecipated season by the Portuguese. It is the time for vacation, beach, Vinho Verde and popular festivities. The days have plenty of sunshine, and temperatures go above 30ºC/86ºF in several regions. Prices tend to be higher than any other season, with more crowds as well, as most families take this time to travel. Mornings by the coastline tend to be cooler, and Alentejo can feel extremely hot.

Autumn
SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER

Autumn (Fall) is, in our opinion, the best time to travel to Portugal. Although Summer is over, September and October maintain warm temperatures, and the weather is still good to go to the beach, and perfect for cultural activities such as walking in Lisbon and Porto, visiting museums etc. It is the perfect transition period with warm days and cooler nights. It is also great time to have some wine tastings.

Winter
DECEMBER - MARCH

The Winter in Portugal tends to be mild, compared to other European countries. Usually, we get a mix of sun and rain even in the same day. Although cooler, this season is perfect to visit the country without the crowds, and to get away away from harsh winters. The minimum temperature in Lisbon is around 8ºC/46ºF, perfect for Christmas Markets. Temperatures tend to feel cooler because of wind and humidity.

Portugal Weather by Region

From North to South, the western side faces the Atlantic Ocean, stable and wide enough to affect the weather throughout the country. However, in the South, the Atlantic Ocean mixes with the Mediterranean Sea. This milds down everything, creating the perfect conditions to make the South of Portugal the area with more favourable temperatures throughout the year.

Spain embraces the North and East side borders of Portugal. Looking at both countries, we have a large inland area with a temperature amplitude compared to a desert. Spain’s geographic layout allows colder winds from northern territories to get to Portugal due to the large flat valley area of Spain.

And then we have the Açores, in the middle of the Atlantic, mild all year-round, but with the occasional rain as a surprise. Madeira island enjoys warm temepratures throughout the year, with no extreme changes: perfect for the hikes along the levadas!
